Important Questions to ask the Pharmacist

Posted by Erin Broughton on February 12, 2020

Before starting new medication, we encourage you to ask your pharmacist these important questions to avoid serious complications. As a caregiver, it is important to make a note of the current prescriptions, over-the-counter medicine, supplements, and vitamins your loved one is currently taking to ensure there are no conflicts.

  1. What is the name of this medication and why is it being prescribed?

  2. What is it specifically expected to do?

  3. How long should I expect to be on this drug?

  4. How will I know if the medication is working?

  5. What are the potential side effects?

  6. Could this medication interact with other drugs I am or might be taking? With foods?

  7. Does this medication cause tolerance, dependence, or addiction? What reactions might I expect if I stop taking this drug?

  8. If a medication dosage is missed, what should I do?

  9. Will a refill be needed, if so, how do I arrange that?

  10. Is the medication taken at meals or in between?

  11. Are there any food or activities that should be avoided while on this medication?
